Genetic Literature Curator, Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge (UK).
Vacancy Reference No: PC03259 Salary: £21,682-£24,403 or £25,134-£32,796
Limit of tenure applies*
The Cambridge division of FlyBase (http://flybase.org/ and http://www.gen.cam.ac.uk/Research/flybase.htm) seeks a new full time curator to join its team of five curators.
NOTE: This vacancy is in addition to the curator positon advertised recently (Ref. PC03120). Applicants for that position need not reapply as they will be considered for both positions.
FlyBase is the premier publicly funded research database of integrated genetic, genomic and functional data for Drosophila, a major model organism in biomedical research. FlyBase is provided by a consortium of Drosophila geneticists, bioinformaticians and computer scientists at Harvard University (USA), Indiana University (USA) and the University of Cambridge (UK).
The major goal of the Cambridge FlyBase curators is to extract genetic data from the primary Drosophila research literature and convert it into a form suitable for incorporation within FlyBase, so that it can be accessed by its diverse group of users worldwide through the website interface. In addition, the curators work with the international community of curators to develop standards of database annotation, and with Drosophila researchers to improve the accessibility of the data within FlyBase. Curators also give training sessions for new users, assist users online and at research conference workshops, and share an enthusiasm for communicating science clearly.
The level of appointment will be dependent on skills and experience. A bachelor's degree in a field of biology is essential, and applications are welcomed from those who have completed their Ph.D. and those with postdoctoral training. Experience with Drosophila and/or genetics would be an advantage. Good communication skills and the ability to work with a high level of attention to detail are essential. Extensive computer experience is not necessary.
